Searching for Bobby Fischer
Much more a deeply thoughtful and thought-provoking film about relationships between parent and teacher and child/student than a film about a chess prodigy. You don't have to know or care anything about the game of chess to find viewing this film to be a deeply moving experience. Every parent and teacher struggles with how to encourage and teach a child to be his or her best without pushing in a harmful way. Most parents know that competition in life can't be avoided, but that children can be harmed and/or can benefit from their participation in competitive activities run by (for?) adults. A side issue faced in a few families is whether and how a child with world-class skills can still lead a normal life and just be a regular child at times. "Searching for Bobby Fischer" addresses these issues better than any other film I can think of. The acting is outstanding; everyone is very convincing in his and her roles. The editing and cinematography in this film are also especially effective at telling the story.
Dean's Chess Academy
This is a great product for all beginners, kids and adults alike. No previous knowledge of chess is assumed. Dean Ippolito, who is a well-known international player and a professional chess teacher, explains the basics of chess such as how the pieces move, and then moves on to more complex subjects, including how to play openings, how to checkmate, and tactical tricks you can use to outsmart your opponent. Anybody can become a chess player with this excellent 2-DVD course!
Chess Starts Here
This was a great video introduction to chess, and it makes a nice complement to the outstanding movie/book, "Searching for Bobby Fischer." If you saw the videotape version of the film you might have caught sight of the real Josh Waitzkin and Bruce Pandolfini in the short feature after the film. Here they are in the flesh, explaining the fundamentals of the game. This is simple, straightforward instruction. If you are able to whip out this tape right after they watch the film and happen to have a chess set handy, you might find a board game you and your kids can play together.
This video is for real beginner of chess.
